Let's have a bit of Season 3 Booth shall we, when all he had to worry about was keeping his manly bits free from pesticides and leaving his footprint for all to see.

Character analysis of Booth: The Secret in the Soil. Wow, No love lost between the two of you, I see. )

Mummy in the Maze next time.

Better weather today but I see we have snow forecast for Sunday. Pffft

Still windy but at least we haven't got feet of snow to go with it. I am going out tonight for pizza and a quiz for laughs so I shall be reporting back on that tomorrow.

In the meantime, let's motor rapidly through some filler episodes for Seeley Booth in Season 3.

Well here we are at the end of January, during which I have posted every day for the Nablopomo challenge. I have to say it's been a bit of a struggle at times, but the day has come when I feel proud to have succeeded.

The transfer window closes today and Sunderland so far have lost Darren Bent and now Paulo Da Silva has gone to Real Zaragoza for an undisclosed fee. We have gained Sulley Muntari on loan from Inter Milan to the end of the season and bought Stephane Sessegnon, a Benin midfielder, from Paris Saint-Germain for £5 million. I don't expect any last minute deals so we will enter a critical two months in our season. By the end of them we may be on the brink of qualifying for the Europa League competition.... or not.
Some stuff about The Bullet in the Brain )

Now I should really go to the shops because my watch needs a new battery. At least the sun is out though it is not very warm.

Well that was a marathon! Anyhoo. Here are the random icons I have made to mark the excellent return to form of SHOW with The Bullet in the Brain.

I made the caps myself, but there are some stills and behind the scenes stuff from the Gallery at [livejournal.com profile] 206_bones . Thanks are due for those.

Here is a sample and the rest are behind the cut.

Gah. There I was footling about making icons last night, watching the Spanish football, recording the skating when poof! all the lights went out. Gallingly, the lights over the road and up the hill were still on, but to the west: total darkness.

9.45, I went to bed where a very aggravating discussion about religion and homosexuality was going on on Radio 4. What a bunch of apologists the panel was. They were so busy bending over backwards to respect each others views I never found out what each of them actually believed. Phrases like secular theocracy were bandied about. Pah. Posers.

Friends *gathers you all to my ample bosom* One hour (as it turned out) without online communication and I had to go to bed! Anyway, I divined when the electricity came back on by some 6th sense and got up again. 10.44. I had to set all the electric clocks again. Of course, now I was awake, so I watched Baking made easy which I recorded because it had a glam mac and cheese recipe. Why do outrageously skinny people have to present these shows? The recipes featured were strawberry and mascarpone swiss roll - all sugar and eggs; the aforementioned mac and cheese with 1/2 a pint of double cream and parmesan and dolcelatte in it and then a pavlova with more cream and sugar. She looked anorexic. Grrrr.

To pull myself together I watched the Men's ice skating final which had fortunately finished recording before the lights went out. The winner was a French youth who was extremely flashy but a very good skater. His trainer, who is Russian and bears a passing resemblance to Billy Joel, was clearly pissed off by his antics in the kiss and cry area where the results are given out. Still, the lad is only 19. Plenty of quadruples in evidence, among them Brian Joubert who pulled himself up from 7th to finish second. A Czech skater who danced to An American in Paris looked disappointed to finish 3rd which was frustrating because he knocked a Belgian skater down to 4th who had skated out of his skin and showed real skill dancing to music from The Mummy. This after years battling injuries. Ah the way of the world.

After that I watched Glee which was the Grilled Cheesus episode and was poor. It was somehow a holding pattern episode in spite of Kurt's trauma. Two gripes, and I know the show is satirical, but Rachel really needs to get over herself and her Barbra Streisand impersonation and why does Chris Colfer get Golden Globes for basically playing himself? Anyway, I found the religious theme in poor taste, satirical or not. I think it can be dangerous to mock people's faith unless it is handled well. How come Kurt was able to wear his hat in church? Yes yes it was making a point about why he went, but it felt wrong to me. Maybe you don't have to take your hat off if you are a man in American churches? Petty of me I know, but meh.

And so to bed (again).

The Chair

I have a new computer chair. It took three of us to put it together. That's one base, one back, one seat, 1 stand, 2 arms and 12 screws.  2 hours to get the screws in with an Allen key and a great deal of sweat. We then stopped for lunch - out at the local pub. It was delicious. I had loin of pork in a cream and leek sauce with veg that was omnomnom. Dad had panfried salmon in a prawn butter sauce that he liked so much he borrowed a veg serving spoon to demolish every drop. Mam had steak and Ale pie with chips. We were completely full.

Came back to finish off chair and it wasn't right. We had screwed the seat to the base stand thing backwards. That was resolved and then dad figured out how to move the back to a comfortable position. They left after 4 o'clock with the old chair. I am now sitting in the new chair totally relaxed.

FA Cup weekend this week so the lads are having a rest because we're out already. Just as well with our injuries. Manchester  Utd are fielding a depleted team but still beating Southampton. Blackpool got fined this week by the FA for fielding a 'weakened team' in a league game. They lost though and United are currently winning anyway. So they should: they are playing a team 2 leagues below them. These rules are silly when you have a 25 man squad to pick from. Who decides whether they should play, the club manager or the governing body?

In other news it is cold with hard frost. It was so cold during the night I woke up. Had to snuggle up to get warm. That is all.

I'm waiting for certain things to update themselves so here are the skating results. The German couple skated to The Pink Panther music, she in a bright neon pink body suit and were stupendous. The Russians danced to Clair de Lune and were beautiful. That Tamaguchi has superb poise managing to land a couple of triples where many would have fallen. The Germans won and regained their title. The British couple lying 7th had one fall and then right near the end of the programme his blade just stuck in the ice and he fell. Unfortunately he had his partner in a lift at the time so she came crashing down too. Fortunately, neither was hurt and he was able to pick her up and go into the closing pose, but it was very hairy there for a moment. Apparently she had a pain killing injection before they even skated. They still finished 8th. Tough people these skaters.

Amaryllis update. The second one is really tall and now has two stalks of buds. I'm really excited as I haven't had a two flower Amaryllis for years and certainly not from Aldi (£1.50).

OK, less than a minute to go so I'll be back later!  (o:

Ah my favourite bit of January: the ISU European skating championships from Bern.

The Ice Dancers were up first, my favourites the Ice Dancing. A change in the rules meant they have two phases instead of the three compulsory, original and free. They now do a short dance and then the free. The British couple Sinead and John Kerr are in their final season and did the best short programme I've seen from them.

The dance had to include the Golden Waltz. They always choose good music and this time they aced it with Etta James' At Last and Shut up and let me go by the Ting tings. Great. John always has trouble with the twizzles, but this time he was spot on. They are 3rd going into the free and I hope they get a medal. I've put up At Last before when Sky used it for the return of Bones, but not the Ting tings so here it is.

You can see that on the ice I hope. I'm watching the pairs short at the moment and it is outstanding quality. The rink by the way is open and everyone has been issued with Army blankets in the audience to keep warm.

Great night out last night with friends for Sue's birthday. I just had the home made chicken liver pate and scampi to eat and a G & T for a treat. Didn't manage to eat everything because there was a huge amount of pate and the scampi came with salad and chips and vegetables. Finished with latte and tiffin. Omnomnom. Lou had the loin of venison in forest fruits sauce of which I had a taste and it was superb. The venison was so tender. Sue had Moroccan lamb stew with couscous and Pat had chicken fajitas. Pretty eclectic restaurant as you can tell. Sue liked the trinket box and the apple clock that should have been for Christmas so that was all right.

Bones tonight and Mel has been squeeing all week so I hope it pans out. I need optimism!

Just to finish, the last Pairs couple from the Czech Republic danced to this.

I have a lot to say about football which I inflict on you even though the majority of you have no idea what the game is or the attraction. Today's footballers are fabulously well paid, move around between clubs and even countries to fulfill their ambitions of glory. Today is the funeral of one of the giants of the game - Nat Lofthouse of Bolton Wanderers.

He was born the same year as my dad 1925. Here he is talking to another great of that era, Jimmy Armfield.

Like my dad, he was 14 when the Second World War broke out. Like my dad he went down the pit. Lofthouse was a Bevan Boy, men conscripted into the coal mines to keep the coal coming while others went off to war. Unlike my dad he had already signed for Bolton Wanderers and became part of their legend.

He played two FA Cup Finals that passed into legend. In 1953 he was on the losing side against Blackpool in what became known as the Matthews Final when the two Stans, Matthews and Mortensen, won the cup for Blackpool. Lofthouse scored, but the feat was lost in the euphoria of Sir Stanley Matthews winning the FA Cup at the age of 38.

In the 1958 Cup Final, he scored the winner, famously barging Manchester United goalkeeper Harry Gregg into the net in the process. Vic Halom did the same thing in 1973 and the goal was disallowed. Not in the 50s. They won 2 - 0 with Nat scoring both goals against the survivors of the Munich Air Disaster that had decimated the Manchester Utd team 3 months before.

He played centre forward for England between 1950 and 1958, scoring 30 times in 33 games, an unparalleled goals to games ratio. He earned the nickname Lion of Vienna in 1952, scoring his second goal against Austria in spite of being elbowed in the face, tackled from behind and brought down by the goalkeeper.

His funeral is happening now, attended by the great and good of football, members of the Royal Lancaster Regiment who are forming a guard of honour down the street and children from Nat Lofthouse's school where he was discovered as a schoolboy player. His name adorns one of the stands at Reebok Stadium, Bolton Wanderers home ground, and his legend will live on. One of a kind.

Nat Lofthouse 1925-2011, gentleman
