Well here we are at the end of January, during which I have posted every day for the Nablopomo challenge. I have to say it's been a bit of a struggle at times, but the day has come when I feel proud to have succeeded.
The transfer window closes today and Sunderland so far have lost Darren Bent and now Paulo Da Silva has gone to Real Zaragoza for an undisclosed fee. We have gained Sulley Muntari on loan from Inter Milan to the end of the season and bought Stephane Sessegnon, a Benin midfielder, from Paris Saint-Germain for £5 million. I don't expect any last minute deals so we will enter a critical two months in our season. By the end of them we may be on the brink of qualifying for the Europa League competition.... or not.
Meanwhile, I am still full of admiration for The Bullet in the Brain, particularly how well it was directed by David Boreanaz and how we may finally get some real back story on Seeley Booth. I hope it happens and we don't get too sidetracked by the sideshow that has dominated this season. It would be a pity to set up what looks like an intriguing and exciting situation and then waste time

I enjoy DB's style of directing. He did a good job way back on Angel when he debut directed Soul Purpose and the three he has done so far on Bones have all had interesting aspects. The opening of The Bones That Foam with the bungee jump out of the balloon was unusual and his use of steadicam in that episode added an edge to a run of the mill case.
He was even more successful on The Parts in the Sum of the Whole where he got stellar performances from the whole cast especially Emily and himself. The story was tricky to handle with lengthy flashbacks to the beginning of their partnership intercut with current scenes and everyone just sold it. The last scene was beautifully played by them both and a lot of that was down to how well David and Emily knew their characters and how well the director used their emotions.
Now we had his third runout and there were some excellent crowd scenes at the start which must have been a challenge to manipulate convincingly.
He takes this directing lark very seriously and I know that he spends a lot of time preparing. The horror aspects were nicely dwelt on too not just the fact that Taffet's head was literally blown off but the camera went to have a second look. Similarly, the body in the bathtub was spectacularly gross and even Brennan ran away from the smell.
The other thing he did well was all the action. Nothing like a good chase to get the blood flowing and that run through the woods was clearly David himself before he got blown up. Booth still got his gun out with a dislocated shoulder! This man knows knows limits. It set the rest of the season up beautifully. Good lad and I look forward to your next outing behind the camera.
I am pleased to see a return to old school Bones and how appropriate that it is a baddie from Season 2 and 4 who has instigated the new arc. The way the trial ran it always felt like an unsatisfactory conclusion to the personal demons Taffet let loose for Brennan, Hodgins and Booth. Hodgins' euphoria was understandable if somewhat gruesome, but the scene in Sweets' car seemed too pat to be a satisfactory resolution.
As for Booth, it's about time that some of the murky things he has only hinted at from his past should be exposed. Beyond being a sniper and a couple of brief comments about Guatemala and Kosovo we know very little. Why did he stop? This Broadsky bloke could be a clue. And why did Booth know Bill from Afghanistan. What was he really doing there that he could walk away?
Now I should really go to the shops because my watch needs a new battery. At least the sun is out though it is not very warm.

Date: 2011-01-31 08:27 pm (UTC)I really hope we get lots more of Booth backstory. There is so much there that could be explored. I feel like I've finally got a reason to look forward to bones again, rather than dreading it.
