Ghana 2 USA 1 after extra time. Only the third African nation to get through to the quarter finals ever. Even though John Mensah is only on loan to Sunderland last season he played and is there. Will England join him? Earlier Uruguay got through against South Korea by the same scoreline. They now play Ghana and I wouldn't like to predict that result.

Meanwhile we have had a power cut and a slight shower. My mam rang to see if I was all right as they had a tremendous thinderstorm that blew all their lights. We only live 25 miles apart. Weird. It is quite dark now, but I can't decide if it's twilight or gathering clouds.

Also, I realise I just posted that comment apropos to nothing. I hope you don't mind me suddenly commenting on your post. I was being nosy, or curious.

You've made two good points as to why the games seem different this year. I haven't been able to watch much of it this year (I'm more of a casual observer really) but from what I've read it's been very unusual. The vuvezelas seem to have really made an impact. It's a pity that they've drowned out all the national cheers. I'm very glad also that I'm not actually in the crowd watching, I'd say the vuves would really ruin the experience.

Oh pipe up any time. England are out so I can watch with enjoyment and the sound off. I have Chile in the sweep so they'll be gone next.

The Argentina Mexico game was a bit better on the vuvuzela front, but I had to put one game off when I was driving back on Friday because the drones were so loud I couldn't hear the commentators. Headache.
