arias

Saturday turned out to be one of those cool days that make it all worthwhile.

The sun was out and Euro 2008 was starting although I had to Sky+ it because I was otherwise engaged.
Down to parents and then off to B & Q for the continued wallpaper hunt which was somewhat successful in that there were one or two to choose from. So we snaffled a piece for me to compare with the green of my walls.
On to the Galleries at Washington for Feverfew tablets and a snack. Thence to find some cheap(sic) petrol at Morrisons and then to drop mam off.

Up to Chester-le-Street to rendezvous with Pat for our trip to Debra's and the Opera. Painlessly through Newcastle only to get lost(sic) because Pat thought Debra lived in Simonside Street and not Swaledale. Pulled over to consult A-Z where the error was spotted though we still don't know why Pat thought of Simonside. In to watch the Derby where I was closest with the horse finishing fourth. Off to sit out in Debra's garden and admire her chamomile lawn while drinking some very nice Prosecco wine. This was followed by a massive tea of antipasta, mostly courtesy of Jamie Oliver, and then pasta. No room for lemon meringue.

Bill, Debra's partner, came home in the middle of this having been to see Britten's Midsummer Night's Dream which he described as 'interesting'.

Taxi arrived and off we went to see Verdi's Macbeth. Opera North always do interesting productions and this was no different. While the music wasn't exactly memorable certain arias did stand out: Lady Macbeth, Macduff's lament at the death of his children and the Chorus at the murder of Duncan. Banquo had an excellent voice; pity he didn't have much to sing. Anyway, we thoroughly enjoyed it.

Back to Debra's for coffee and a mull and then home by 12.20. I watched the football on fast forward to see the goals.

Today, England swatted the New Zealand bunch by an innings and 9 runs in 2 hours.
