What? Two in a week?
Aug. 24th, 2011 03:11 pmYes! I have moved swiftly on to the next three episodes of Season 4 to see what more we can find out about Booth. As hinted in the previous entry, the need to remind ourselves that Booth is smart is on the agenda over these focused on others stories. With that in mind, let's consider The Doctor in the Den, The Science in the Physicist and The Cinderella in the Cardboard
A BOOTH FOR ALL SEASONS
BOOTH: Yes! Pinky stumps the Brain.
BOOTH IN SEASON 4: pop culture has its place in crime fighting
The Doctor in the Den has a focus on Cam for a change, which allows Booth to demonstrate his skills with friends without any input from Sweets. Cam is probably his oldest friend and he knows her and what she needs instinctively. She had lived with the victim and his young daughter for two years.

By the end of the episode, Brennan has advised Cam to take Michelle in, showing some emotional growth herself there, and popped round to Booth's place for take out. Booth is rather surprised at what Bones has done, but it also allows him to have another little homily about being a parent, this time as an adult rather than as a high school boy.

BOOTH: So, I called the hospital and Dr. Welton has been missing for two days. I’m sorry, Cam.
CAM: I haven’t even seen Andrew for 10 years. It’s silly for me to be reacting like this.
BOOTH: No, it’s not. You know what, it was a big part of your life.
Dr Welton's daughter, Michelle has to be told and, although Booth wants to call a social worker, he does not argue when Cam insists she must tell Michelle herself, and alone. Again, Booth shows his understanding of what Cam is feeling and has to explain to Bones.

BRENNAN: Well, she told me she never wanted to have kids.
BOOTH: Maybe Michelle is the reason.
BRENNAN: I don’t understand.
BOOTH: She loved Welton and lived with him for about two years and she raised Michelle like she was her own. And then she’s been alone for all that time because she doesn’t want to put herself in that position again.
BRENNAN: But that was 10 years ago.
BOOTH: For Cam there are emotional considerations here. That’s why she has to be involved in the case.
BRENNAN: With us?
BOOTH: It’s best that you...stay in the lab a little bit more. Just this time around.
BRENNAN: Because that’s where I’m most useful. I understand. You and Cam can rely on your statistically inaccurate guts to solve the case.
BOOTH: She needs this. Just trust me on this, Bones.
The importance of children and being a parent is revisited at the end of the episode and it could be construed as a bit of foreshadowing of Brennan's unexpected decision in Critic in the Cabernet. For now we have Booth acknowledging the need for emotional closure and illustrating his own parenting skills. This was referenced in the opening where he sets the pace for where his interests and useful factoids find their origin: Parker.
We already know from way back in Season 2 that Booth's favourite animals are monkeys and a body in the zoo seems like an ideal opportunity:
BOOTH: I was here last weekend with Parker. They got monkeys swinging free - right over there (Points). Do you think we have time?
BRENNAN: Booth, we’re here to recover a set of remains.
BOOTH: Come on, Bones. You gotta take time to smell the primates.
BRENNAN: Why? They are malodorous and they throw their excrement.
No fun to be had there then. However, he has got some fun factoids:
BOOTH: According to, uh, Parker’s big book of animals, they can pounce at 35 miles an hour and leap 30 feet.
BRENNAN: The tiger fed on the flesh and internal organs before he started cleaning the bones.
BOOTH: You know, I’m thinking the victim wandered away from his car, he was drunk, and he ended up in this area. Same thing happened to a guy last year in the giraffe section.
BRENNAN: Giraffes are herbivores. They don’t eat people.
BOOTH: That part is different. The guy broke his arm. Did you know that giraffes can weigh up to two tons?
BRENNAN: Yes, everyone knows that.
BOOTH: And they sleep less than two hours a day.
BRENNAN: That I did not know.
Yay! Booth knew something Bones didn't. Whatever the source, Booth soaks up information and, for once he gets the chance to show it off. Even if the source was a children's book, Booth is childlike rather than childish. His pop culture may be based on cartoons, television and his son's reading material, but it can be useful. Later he is at it again.

BRENNAN: No lions?
HODGINS: None in the whole park. There are tigers.
BOOTH: How much difference can there be between lion urine and tiger urine?
BRENNAN: There are no stripes in tiger urine.
BOOTH: I didn’t say there are.
BRENNAN: I just know how much you love cartoons.
HODGINS: Tom and Jerry?
BOOTH: Bugs and Daffy.
HODGINS: All right, now, this is the Capybara enclosure. (brings up a picture of a capybara on the Wildlife Park) Now, they use crystallized lion urine around the edges of this enclosure to keep the capybaras inside. Then, look at this. (Hodgins brings up another picture)
BRENNAN: The reptile shed.
BOOTH: (going up behind Brennan) Snakes!
BRENNAN: Ahhh. What is that?
HODGINS: It’s a snake hook. It’s used for picking them up, but keeping them at a safe distance.
BRENNAN: That hook could have severed the artery and deposited the snake scales in the gouge in the femur.
BOOTH: So, he was killed around that area with something like that thing.
BRENNAN: That is very imprecise.
BOOTH: Works for me.
So a Bugs and Daffy man. Perhaps not a surprise as they are so much more anarchic than Tom and Jerry, make much use of puns in the titles and they talk. Notice how he also teases Brennan with shouting 'snakes' in her ear as a reminder of how they scared her in Mummy in the Maze

BOOTH: I don't know where Cam gets the idea she can take in a 16 year old girl.
BRENNAN: You don't think she can do it?
BOOTH: No, she can do it. It's just...Just because somebody thinks that they can do something, doesn't mean that they should.
BRENNAN: I told her I thought it would be a good idea.
BOOTH: Wow. Why?
BRENNAN: Well, she told me a story about a salt shaker that affected me emotionally.

BOOTH: I just can't believe Cam would do that. She's a lot like you, you know?
BRENNAN: What do you mean?
BOOTH: Well, you know, she's independent, likes to be alone. You know, free of personal encumbrances.
BRENNAN: Well, I'm not free of personal encumbrances.
BOOTH: Look, you don't have real responsibilities in life until you have a child. Believe me.
BRENNAN: What, are you suggesting that I am not a fully engaged human being because I don't have a child?
BOOTH: No, I - (laughs) Good for Cam.
BRENNAN: So I gave her good advice.
BOOTH: Yes, Bones. You gave her great advice.
His reward is to get tofu instead of the ribs, which apparently is like eating a sponge, but not too bad as far as tofu goes as a celebratory meal. Ever the gentleman Booth.

So, this was as unpromising for Booth revelations as the previous three episodes, but there were little moments when the old Booth appeared. Even his desk has had a tidy and a new toy to play with.

On the face of it, the next episode would seem even less promising as it is firmly set in Brennan's world of science and the intellectually brilliant. Booth turns out to have some hidden depths though as he manages to hold his own in the alien world of The Science in the Physicist
And I shall post that tomorrow as this heavy weather has given me a headache. Sheesh.

Date: 2011-08-24 06:56 pm (UTC)Hurray for an episode where Booth gets to shine. No professionals, as in a certain psychologist, being shoe-horned in to advise Cam. I like these interactions between friends, especially the Booth-Cam friendship. And Brennan gets to grow, a good epi for them both.
For some reason I find the second picture with Booth and the beer bottle funny, hope he avoided whiplash!
Was going to say ugly couch, but realized it's a striped throw, then it's actually nice. And there is nothing wrong with tofu, ribs are basically respiratory muscles ;)

I'm really looking forward to what you have to say about "Science in the Physicist". Most of the time, we see Brennan in Booth's "world", i. e. crime fighting, so he's the one who gives her guidance there, but in this episode Booth is the one who has to follow her onto her home turf, so to say, and I always found it interesting how it brings his insecurities to the surface.

Date: 2011-08-24 07:23 pm (UTC)Anyhoo, I paused before Science in the Physicist because there is a fine line to tread between stupidity and fake science knowledge that Booth has to negotiate without coming off as unbelievable. Hopefully, I can let him shine.
