You know, the frost has barely moved today. It is still on the grass and in the shadow on the roof over the road. The scaffolding is finally coming down from the neighbour's roof replacement. It has been there since the end of October, through all the snow and everything. The sun has been out all day, obviously without much heat and it looks like it will be a glorious sunset in about half an hour.

Today friends we start on Season 3 of Booth's journey with Bones. We have new players, a season long villain although this was the year of the writers' strike so that is a truncated season (and oh how we protested!) and a slightly changed dynamic between the main protagonists. Some characters hit their stride, some get too much screen time ( a personal view) and the first signs of amajor fumble appear. Also, there is a change in how Booth is characterised that becomes more noticeable in Season 4. Let's ease into this with some housekeeping.
You wanna put that down?
BOOTH IN SEASON 3 - The Office
I like to look at how Booth's office looks at the start of a season. Booth is very protective of his space. He conveys with a look that he does not like it when Hodgins tried to put his feet on the desk in Spaceman in a Crater - twice; and a raising of the eyebrows is enough to get Charlie to remove his hands when he puts them on the desk in Stargazer in a Puddle. So, items of importance to Booth are well represented as time goes on. One thing to notice is the desk has been decluttered. His rosary. pot of flags, grenade and magic 8 ball are no longer on display, although the 8 ball does reappear.
Here we are at the start of the Season in Widow's Son in the Windshield.
Some things are the same: the picture of a plane, the geometric drawing of the ice hockey goal (I'll come back to that) and the medals. The new things in this picture are some silver item that looks like a missile; a white coffee mug which may have a Flyers logo on it and a photo of an ice hockey player. (no basketball memorabilia at all you will note) Thanks to
huronia and spouse I can say that the player is from the Boston Bruins (I worked that out myself from the uniform colours and logo). Spouse suggested the player was Bobby Orr which looks likely because very quickly the ice hockey goal is replaced by a very famous bit of ice hockey iconography: a photo of Orr's famous flying goal. My only concern is why Booth, from Philadelphia or Pittsburg, would have a Bruins player on display. It would probably be because he was such a famous player of the era when Booth was born, so a childhood hero would be typical. The Flyers stuff comes later. (apart from the jar and mousemat)
The ice hockey goal picture has always puzzled me. What is its significance? Why does it have place of honour right above Booth's head? I have no idea. It seems to be in a battered state too.
Note the neatness of the desk. The only personal touch in view is his Steelers coffee mug and the hockey puck beside the nameplate. In the background is an eagle figurine, a photo of Parker and a floor lamp.
In this shot we can also see a football and a globe. In addition, Bones was told off for touching his baseball bat. Plenty of sporting evidence then. Gone is the sharpshooter memorabilia and sight.
What else comes into focus?
Here are my guesses. 1 looks like a film poster maybe Frank Sinatra round Pal Joey to me or at least someone from the 50s in a suit running. Maybe it's a G Man.
2 may be a lamp which is another globe. In white you can see Africa and Madagascar off the coast and the sub-continent. It may be a trophy?
3 Are they dials? Are the blue bits speakers? ??
Desk has the mug, the magic 8 ball, the sweetie jar and the Stanley Cup from Season 2, but not much else. The room also seems shorter this season.
On the other side of the door is a smaller seating area as a result of the shortening of the room. I haven't seen the glass table and chairs yet this season.
Here we have the sweeties and Stanley Cup acting as set dressing. There is also a large photo of J Edgar Hoover meeting with President Kennedy and the Attorney General Bobby Kennedy. Here is a shot from the same meeting.

The craquelure effect makes it look like it has been scrumpled up and then rescued from somwhere. It doesn't last much longer though. By Mummy in A Maze it has gone. Here's most of the office in Death in the Saddle.

Here we have the new hockey photo, a Most Wanted poster featuring John Dillinger and the globe moved over a bit. My only worry on the Bobby Orr goal is all of the ones I have found are in black and white and that looks like colour. On the other hand, the uniforms are the right colours. We'll have to keep an eye on that.
Other parts of the office are defined too. Also in Mummy in a Maze we see the side beside the window has had all the box files and shelves removed and some pictures added. Also, the sidetable with more memorabilia has moved along. Help needed on identification of the numbered items.

The curtains gave it away.

Pfft. There are lots of things cluttering his desk! But I suppose everything is relative. Booth is a pack rat, as we've seen from his home. When are you taking a closer look at his apartment?! (With the house key under a rock...)
1. Stance look like a cowboy about to draw, but clothes says later time. From a classic movie?
2. A heinous sports trophy?
3. Speakers was my first thought looking at the picture, without having read your suggestions.
Happy Bones Day :)

Date: 2011-01-20 09:10 pm (UTC)1. See, I thought the stance looked like someone running or dancing.
2. What do you get for the World Series?
3. I thought I spotted a little robot in front.
Booth's apartment reappears in the finale, or at least his bathroom does. That must wait its turn. Where do you keep a rock outside a 2nd floor apartment?

Date: 2011-01-20 09:29 pm (UTC)2. World series? There's one sports expert between the two of us, bb, and it ain't me!
3. Yep, there's a robot.
Rock outside an apartment? Ask HH and the writers. They're the ones who had Brennan mention the rock & key in the finale only to show outside footage of Booth's place above a liquor store in later eps...

I bow to your knowledge of Singing in the Rain. Love most music but have very little love for musicals/sing & dance films. At least it's one film off the list of possibles ;)

Date: 2011-01-25 01:15 am (UTC)I love that you dissect Booth's office. It's quite fun to examine the detritus behind the man.
I also find the goal picture puzzling. The crinkly effect always made me feel like it was a child's drawing (something that would be crumpled up in a backpack and taken home), but the radius is too perfect.
The miniature Stanley Cups - like Booth's- have a team emblem on them and the year that team won the cup. Try as I might I cannot make out the emblem on Booth's cup - but then again I keep getting distracted by his impressively long fingers.
1 - no clue
2 - globe on an odd base
3 - ancient boom box?

Date: 2011-01-25 11:30 am (UTC)Thanks for your thoughts. I have only seen the white mug once and I toyed with it being the top of a bald eagle's head while in flight. The other mug is def. Steelers which may be back in fashion after the SuperBowl!
I have never satisfactorily explained the ice hockey scale drawing and it's gone now so I never will. Maybe Booth drew it in college or something and he carried it with him everywhere until he got his own office. The other photo does not look like the flying goal when I looked at a later episode, but I haven't checked it out fully yet.
I will continue my pursuit of the other set dressings if I spot things in the future. There's also his apartment to look forward to.
