Big Burst o' Bones
Jan. 25th, 2009 07:05 pmThat's not a personal burst, once is enough thank you very much. No I am going to make a cup of coffee - a ten minute job involving flasks and a carrier bag, then I'm going to put my foot up again and give you my considered opinion of the twofer we had this week from Season 4 Bones.
What was nominally Episode 12 (Double Trouble in the Panhandle), but could have been anywhere in the development (sic) of the season, turned out to be a stinker. Sorry to all the droolers over the waistcoat of sex, but what was the point of this farrago? The tone was set I suppose by the argument over jurisdiction: Texas or Oklahoma? In the end it didn't matter and nor did anything else. Mr Double-Barrelled back at the lab was warning enough that this was mostly filler meant to amuse. So I tried to be amused, I really did. However, one thing Brennan can't do is comedy.
Yet again she was oblivious to Booth's worries about being able to pull 'the act' off. We could say that she was showing her absolute trust in Booth's abilities to throw knives, but on the other hand you could say she is on such an ego trip, that she never thought about Booth's worries at all. She was like Rainman: 'I am an excellent driver' became 'I am an excellent highwire walker' and of course that solved the case such as it was.
Furthermore, her highwire walk put no one else in danger; Booth is genuinely concerned for her safety. He, on the other hand, actually had to pull the knife throwing off or it would have resulted in her injury or death. She treated it all like a magic trick and never had an epiphany about the danger she was in. Stupid woman.
For me, this episode was writing by numbers.
At the lab, let's have some light-hearted repartee involving Mr double-barrelled, Angela and Cam with a side of Hodgins thrown in. He can do the sex jokes; Cam can be wry and puckish and Angela can make smart remarks. Mr D-B can entertain us with little known facts. Oh and they have to be able to see the act.
For Sweets? Well, even though Angela actually worked in a circus let's have him be adopted and find out his birth mother was a fake psychic in a carny show. Tee hee: more chances for mockery. Then he can know all about circus people.
For Wanda and Buck Moosejaw? Thay can pretend to have sex and fans can use their imaginations. Oh and let's make Booth extremely uncomfortable by giving him a stupid moustache and Russian accent. Plus, clowns can be the suspects and we can tell them again (see Mummy in the Maze) what the irrational fear of clowns is called. They'll have forgotten.
The circus people? Must suspend disbelief and accept our undercover heroes as genuine. Then, when they find out they're not circus people they can clam up as per Sweets' warning and Brennan can work it out on her own. Brilliant!
I liked Booth's trousers more than the waiscoat. They were an extremely flattering cut.
Now, on to the good stuff. Fire in the Ice was excellent for character development of Booth and allowed David to indulge his passion for ice hockey. It worked. This was vintage Booth, the simmering volcano of violence with the lid about to come off. However, it worked because the violence he displayed served a purpose: either to protect others or for the sake of the case. And he put others' concerns before his own safety, in marked contrast to Brennan's self indulgent danger facing in the previous episode.
Booth learned something about himself too. He was confronted with the fact that he wasn't like his father just because he hit people. Booth senior's violence was directed against the defenceless without any reason for the violence. Booth learnt he was made of better stuff. Also, we saw real trust between partners here, from the point where Brennan never really doubted him to where he took her iceskating and told her he would always be there and never let her fall. I loved the macho-ness of it all and the romance at the end was perfect. David was very understated and Emily was just right in her responses. Also, Booth was allowed not to be stupid and use his investigative skills effectively to solve the case, which was pretty thin but acceptable.
The FBI lady was OK and Wendell was back and fitted in very well. He was even one of Booth's squints in a way that Zack never was. Keep him. Also Caroline was back and was her usual awesome self. There was also Kendra! She hadn't changed much except the fake accent had gone. David must like seeing these familiar faces.
Good episode.
I mostly made my own dinner today, although that meant having to eat it in the kitchen. And I washed up. Sue got her birthday gifts at last and she brought me some magazines and biscuits. Tired now.
