That Friday feeling
Oct. 10th, 2008 07:42 pmActually, I've had a pretty good week so I'll just do the Bones thing and then get back to reading while watching England Under 21s against Wales.
Well, this week could have been better. I think there could have been more made of Booth's attitude to organised religion with regard to the victim of the week and his son. Intolerance seemed to be what they were trying to show this week. Especially the sort that is disguised by religious fervour. How ironic that the murdered victim's son, a man who had preached against the very thing his father had embraced, showing the world who he truly was under the surface, was the only one who accepted the woman his father had become. I feared Booth was going to be stupid with the whole he/she/which thing but it was forgotten after the initial idiocy. I admired Booth's response to the wife who had had plastic surgery when Bones tried to make something about being made in god's image. Embellishing what is already there was a clever riposte.
How ironic also that the murderer was a scorned wife who had jumped to the wrong conclusion about her husband's interest in the Pastor. The Inclusion Church stood up for what its members were, whether it be reformed alcoholics, drug addicts or transexuals. No wonder it spoke to Booth. I liked the interview he had with the son where he asked Booth if he had found redemption. I don't think he has. It was good to be reminded of the first thing we learned about Booth: that he was a sniper looking to even up the score by saving as many lives as he had taken - looking for redemption through his work.
Having said that, there wasn't enough focus on that aspect of Booth. He had to fend off Bones's constant picking at the concept of religion as a way of life and while I can see her point as an atheist, I think she should at least acknowledge that her world view is not the only one and everyone else has a right to hold their beliefs just as she does. Why does she always have to denigrate or seem to mock Booth's religion? Surely even she would not talk while the minister was preaching to his congregation, for politeness sake if nothing else. I thought anthropologist's observed and didn't interfere? Couldn't she see Booth was enjoying it?
The other aspect of Booth which she seemed strangely to condone was the bet he had with Sweets. Was it just a throwaway moment? Probably. They (the writers) seem to forget that Booth is a recovering gambler and was still going to meetings at Gamblers Anonymous last we heard. Admittedly, that was all the way back in Soldier on the Grave and it's only otherwise been referred to when they went to Las Vegas. But it would be in his profile and Sweets would know about it. Hmm.
The double-barrelled Grad intern of the week was an arse and nobody liked him. Booth met him once out in the field but again he never made it into the lab. He probably would have shot him if he had because he couldn't even get past his name. Angela saw him off with suitable quick wit. Vroom vroom indeed. Apparently the writers got bored with him too as he didn't even make it to the end of the show. Speaking of Angela I have another moan, this time about her clothes which have lost all chic. She seems to want to have her underwear, or at least the straps on display. Looks messy
And now we have baseball or whatever so just as we get up a head of steam it's off. Bah!
I am listening to last.fm. It's very nice. I seem to be in an late70s, early 80s bit. I've just listened to the Carpenters and sang all the words and now it's Olivia Newton John. Dear me, I'm old. I honestly Love you? And I remember it. *is sad old git*
