No cooler for it though and it's rained all day. Still, we were out yesterday so it didn't matter.

We were here, at Kilburn in North Yorkshire which is famous for two things: the White horse carved  on the hillside and Robert 'Mousey' Thompson, furniture maker and wood worker extraordinaire.

Now, before we got there I had an epic voyage to get to the parents' house caused by two closed roads blocking all access to their house from mine. A ten minute drive took 30 minutes and a 15 mile detour to accomplish, I went into great and amusing detail about this but sadly lost the entry.

Anyway, instead of going to Northallerton market as I anticipated we went to Helmsley and Kilburn instead. I wish I'd known as I would have taken my camera. There was a very interesting war memorial at Kilburn that Pat would have liked for her collection and Helmsley church had wall paintings. Humph.

Here's an example of Mousey Thompson's work that costs over £1,000. It's a stool. See the mouse.

While in Kilburn I walked back to the junction to check the way to Helmsley. Just as well. Walking back to the car, two camper vans pulled over and a Scotsman leaped out. "How do we get to Pickering?"
Now this was quite funny as wherever we go somebody usually asks my dad the way to somewhere. Fortunately I had my wits about me, so I told them to go to Helmsley as I thought that might be on the way. Bear in mind that Kilburn is in the middle of nowhere and reached by virtually single track roads. They had no idea where they were, but I had already sussed out where Helmsley was and so knew it was sure to be on the right road.

"We don't have to go up Sutton Bank do we?" I assured them they didn't, which as it turned out was correct.  Sutton Bank is a notoriously steep climb that caravans and heavy lorries are not allowed to tackle. At the top it's a 33% incline.

The Scottish bloke in the other camper van appeared with a map and I was able to show them where they were and where Helmsley was on the A70. "You're better than a SatNav", the first Scots fellow said and off they went. When I got back to the car Dad had already pulled out and we had a laugh about yet again being called on to find the way.

Helmsley was good. We got parked and found some good shops where we bought pork pies, curd tarts and lardy cake, all regional foods.
Didn't get home till 7 o'clock thanks to yet another detour to get round the closed roads. Good day.

England rescued a tricky situation at the Test and possibly staved off defeat thanks to 'Freddy ' Flintoff. Steed Malbranque signed for Sunderland and I think that will be it for the signings, unless Mrs Peel turns up too.w
