OK bowing and curtseying is not necessary but I had tea at a castle today. Hah!
Back from Seahouses yesterday after wiping the floor with the opposition in the pub quiz. £34.00 Got a pair of kippers for the parents which they have had for their teas apparently. Beautiful.
Yes posh tea as a farewell to Judith who is going on maternity leave next week and wanted to wish us a bon voyage so to speak. Of course, finding the castle was half the fun. It looks dead easy on the hill above Durham County Cricket ground but there aren't any actual signs saying: 'This way to Lumley Castle'. No. what it says is Golf Course and you sort of have to know that it also means Lumley Castle. Here it is.

Once that secret entrance was negotiated and the car parked the next challenge was to find the door. There was a large sign saying Reception , Rooms, Restaurant This Way but once into the Courtyard nothing. So I boldly went towards a corner with a door and beside it was a sign saying Reception. Sheer luck I found it. However, once in, there was gloom. It takes my poor eyesight about 20 minutes to adjust so I had no chance when the girl on reception said: 'Through that door at the back and along the corridor to the Library.' I couldn't even see the back let alone the door. Fortunately, another minion was going that way so she took me. I felt about 80.
Anyway, once in the Library tea was served - Earl Grey, Assam, ordinary and coffee. For eats there was shortbread already on the table, but I resisted. Sandwiches, white and brown bread, arrived. There was: coronation chicken; smoked salmon and cream cheese; cheese and pickle; ham and tomato with bowls of crisps and coleslaw. We ate them all.
After that came the scones.

They were massive and just out of the oven. More teas and coffee arrived. Two of us shared a scone as they were beyond mere mortals to eat a whole one. They came with butter, strawberry jam, clotted cream and sliced strawberries.

Gorgeous. All for £8.65 (16$) which isn't too bad.
So there you have a typical posh tea.
