mistletoeWatching the FA cup 4th round I saw the first ever goal scored with an assist by a balloon. It went to Sheffield United against Manchester City. The irony was the balloon belonged to Manchester City fans who had released them before kick off when they sank like stones and littered their penalty area.
The ball came across from the wing and as the defender shaped to clear, the ball hit two balloons tied together, eluded the defender who took an air kick and landed at the feet of the attacker who scored. Needless to say the goal keeper spent the next few minutes bursting balloons. But it was too late and they lost 2 - 1.
Name of the defender? Michael Ball. Hee hee.
The weekend word was forakers meaning outside toilet, apparently derived from 'four acres' meaning the field round the back.
Today gives an explanation of the term neck and crop. This comes from medieval English (via Anglo Saxon and French) and Norwegian, both words meaning 'top'. I always thought it had something to do with gizzards, but no: if you fall neck and crop it means you crash completely.
Still procrastinating over work and I've only got the rest of the week. *sigh*
