Well here we are with a selection of pictures that everyone takes in Rome. Apologies for that and the size of this.
First day we got a Metro pass and took to the train. It was surprising how close things were to each other. Although we still walked a fair bit it wasn't as bad as London. There will be more later.

This was St Peter's square on the night we arrived. The Pope had just finished his 6 o'clock Mass. If we hadn't been held up by the metal detectors we would have seen more of him than the back as he disappeared inside. The crowds just stayed and chanted 'Benedetto' for ages. Some made themselves into human pyramids. Occasionally, screams would ring out when a light came on in case he was going to wave at the window. Talk about mass hysteria. A gaggle of banner bearing Poles from Widowice engulfed where Pat and I were standing and started singing on behalf of the beatification of Pope John Paul II. We'll be in all their pictures. Went back to hotel without seeing his Holiness.
Next morning - The Spanish steps, Trevi Fountain, Pantheon, 'The Wedding Cake, Bernini's elephant.

This is Raphael's tomb in the Pantheon

The Wedding cake is the Romans' name for the Victor Emmanuel II memorial that dominates the skyline almost every where you look. They claim not to like it, but when Italy won the World Cup this is where the fans came to celebrate.

Wonderful! Loved seeing these pictures. I don't think I knew they put Rafael in the pantheon, though I went there and loved it.

And when I saw the Trevi fountain it was covered in scaffolding.

Whao for Easter hysteria. It's funny but I was in Greece over Easter and couldn't figure out why it wasn't celebrated, but I think it was that there dates are different from ours.

Don't think Italy is in here, but maybe. These are some of my classical pics: http://www.livejournal.com/tools/memories.bml?user=sexymermaid&keyword=classical+pictures&filter=all

I looked at your piccies. They are great. I've been to some of the Greek ones from when we used to take parties of school kids away at Easter. The last trip ended with an earthquake so we took it as a sign. Sadly I didn't have a digital camera in the 90s when we were there or I couldhave topped your lion gate photo with one of the sun shining underneath. Maybe I can scan it. As for Delphi, I found that the most tranquil place I've ever been. It was a day off for some of the adults in the party and we drove up there from Athens.
I've never been to Turkey but those images look amazing. I'll find one of my Florence pictures to post as well. Day 2 to come!
