So funny at the quiz last night.
Only me and Pat there: Sue in Harrogate, Lou batting. It was August quiz we never like the end of the month quizzes, double up rounds History, Birthdays, news all relating to the current month and we're crap at the news always. Who knew the Dalai Lama had passed away or what the name of the new one was? Not us. Anyhoo. First laugh was the Blockbuster round. This week all the words began with N, until question 10. Which TV programme featured KITT the talking car? Obviously the K was silent when you spell it too.
Then we had in a General Knowledge round the nickname of Henri Charriere and Peter in his usual non-helpful help offered the extra clue that it means bird in French. "Butterfly!" we all chorused.
By the last round Pat and me had given up. This is the Music round and is either a famine or a feast and we were 5 points behind. Things looked up when the first 'singer' was Groucho Marx - my hero. Sharing answers with our friends cos we thought we had no chance resulted in us both getting them all right. Results announced we had won! By 5 marks! impossible. Peter realised the error of his ways and announced a tie - with our friends. I couldn't stop laughing. Tie breaker. When was Enid Blyton born. 1896 came immediately into my head so we put it in. Meanwhile much argument ensued on the next table about their answer. Bill set off and was called back for further consultation. Eventually they placated each other. Their answer? 1895. The real answer 1897. So we won being nearer by 1 year. Seems we couldn't get out of winning. The whole thing is a farce really but it gets us out and we won £6.
In other news. I love my new washer. How sad is that? Also I was so stunned I didn't post about Sunderland a) winning a game, b) appointing Roy Keane as manager. It's almost worth supporting them again. No money to be spent on them yet though. Too many years of failure to get over. Then we had in a General Knowledge round the nickname of Henri Charriere and Peter in his usual non-helpful help offered the extra clue that it means bird in French.
