mistletoe: (World Cup)

So far this World Cup is lacking some excitement. Currently, Serbia are playing Ghana and we have a Sunderland player on the pitch, our injury prone John Mensah.

Also in his honour the National Anthem as a Serbian gets sent off. That's two in one day.

e.t.a. Ghana have been given a penalty for a hand ball.  1 nil. (Gyan) What a beautiful penalty. 7 minutes to go.

Elsewhere I have been viewing one or two things on telly apart from the football.

1. Glee. Initially, I didn't like it, but it has grown on me to a degree. Some characters have thankfully disappeared such as Ken the sports coach and I am glad they dropped the surrogate mother story because that was getting too stretched to be believable even in a parody. Also they have expanded the back stories of one or two of the kids apart from Rachel. I think I like Mercedes best, especially her voice. Some of the covers have been very good. I particularly enjoyed the Madonna episode with Kurt and Pam. So, it's the finale on Monday and that will be one less thing to watch.
2. Castle. Another thing I will not be watching now that the first season is over. Sorry to several f-list people, but I don't get Nathan Fillion's attraction. This premise is also cliched in the extreme. We have the successful pulp fiction writer, his flaky mother and his perfect teenage daughter. Where's the tension there? We then have his unwilling cop partner who I also find ... familiar. I refer to her as Kate Lockley and I have no idea what the character's name is. The first episode was the most interesting, but the last, involving plastic surgery, was just boring. So whenever they show Season 2 I won't be hurrying to watch.
3. White Collar It's OK if a bit formulaic. I wouldn't say I was on tenterhooks for the next episode now that they have introduced the villain who is a rogue FBI agent. They also have a plot device to keep Neal dangling that is old. Bit like Alias.
4. Leverage has finished Season 1 and I really enjoyed that. I liked the stories and the characters. I hope it's not too long before I get to see Season 2.
5. Criminal Minds I've only seen season 1 and it is difficult but gripping viewing with some familiar faces as guest stars. For instance, the 2 part finale featured Sue from Glee as Dr Reid's mother. Season 2 has just started.
6. Lie to Me is back. I thought the first of the new run was rather obvious for once. Cal identified the villain immediately and then exposed himself to a ridiculous level of danger in order to catch him. Still, I am glad to see the series back.
7. Bones Season 1 reruns finish this week, but they jump straight to Season 3 after that. What's wrong with Season 2? What I have noticed is how much Bones has been invested in the victims. That is almost forgotten now. The plots weren't always gripping, but they were centre stage and I miss that. I'll be back to my least favourite Season 4 episodes this week namely The Passenger in the Oven shortly followed by Double Death in the Panhandle. I am not happy with Brennan in those two episodes but I will save my griping for a later post.

Today is wet (again) and not very warm. I have delayed making dinner until this evening, so I could watch both matches which turned out to be not very good. At least I knew a few of the Ghana players. Mensah got through the whole game, which is more than he does for Sunderland. I still hope we can sign him permanently. They were delighted to win the game, the first African team to win a World Cup finals game on African soil. Next tonight is Germany v Australia. Heaven knows how that will turn out.

It's a sad day when I've enjoyed some of the football themed ads more then the games themselves!

Tee hee. I like the one for the Guardian supplement. Words are cleverly put together.
