what am i going to do now?
Jun. 25th, 2008 10:43 pmOh noes! The guys who run my monthly quizmail have decided to pack it in at the end of the year. *Hyperventilates*
They cite the growth of the Internetz (which they can't operate) spoiling their clever ruses i.e. it's actually possible to find the answers in the time allotted. Also, the Royal Mail is not efficient enough. Considering they posted this month's quiz on Tuesday and I got it today that seems pretty weak.
No, the current conspiracy theory on my chat group is that they have proved fallible on so many ambiguous or just plain wrong answers that they have decided to cut their losses and run. Actually their lack of online skillz may be true. The wealth of information has allowed mere mortals to find alternatives to their absolute answers and as there is quite a bit of money involved it's just safer to stop. They have tried to find more obscure questions and pictures to try and catch us out with stuff that's hard to find via search engines and wikipedia and they are obviously finding it tough.
You may recall, or probably not, the great tank dispute of January which unhappily coincided with their revamped league system that allowed only people with all answers right in the top champions league. As that month included a provably wrong answer, to award £1000 prize money to people with the wrong answer was just ... wrong.
All hell broke lose on the chat group and several members threatened never to sully their minds with the quiz again. Now that threat has abated there was further controversy this month with wallabies for which they had to eventually consult the head of Zoology in New South Wales. His response showed that the answers they had (both of them in fact) were wrong. They still marked them right. It won't do.
In other news I have been temporarily promoted to Second in Department until Christmas. More money. Squee!! Meanwhile:

sport has been bubbling along. Today was sports day at our school and it actually went ahead in spite of mizzle and drizzle unlike last year's non event. I really enjoyed it. I was leader of the team of timers - stopwatch in hand - and as the results were based on best times in the year group was A REALLY IMPORTANT JOB. Also, we only had Year 7 in the morning and Year 8 in the afternoon. Painless.
Cricket proved controversial and Paul Collingwood, England Captain and former pupil, had to apologise for demanding a run out when the batsman collided with the bowler and couldn't make his ground in today's ODI. England lost on the last ball fortunately otherwise acrimony could have ruined the final game on Saturday. As it was, the New Zealanders shut the dressing room door on him and wouldn't shake Collingwood's hand at the end of the game. His apology at the presentation took courage and Daniel Vettori was gracious enough to accept it. I bet the Aussies wouldn't. Of course if it had been them and somebody like Phil Symonds he wouldn't have walked.
The Durham lads have qualified for the 1/4 finals of the Twenty20 tournament for the first time thanks to a bunch of South Africans. I think they mean business after their success in the NatWest trophy last year. I think they have come on loads with a good mix of local and international players.
Germany beat Turkey tonight in the semis of Euro 2008, which is a pity as they were poor. Turkey had 9 players injured or suspended and made a good fist of it, only losing in the last minute 3 - 2. Half the game was not shown as a thunderstorm in Vienna meant the power went out. Although the game was in Basle Switzerland, BBC coverage is from Vienna. Spain v Russia tomorrow but I shall be at Seahouses as we are off - again - on Friday.
The fixtures for the new season are out and our first game is at home to Liverpool. Newcastle are away - at Manchester Utd. Ha ha ha ha ha
