You should see the rain! Well you shouldn't because it's not very pleasant. Leaves are turning and falling off the tree outside. Yes, Autumn is upon us; a new season beckons and that means Bones! I shall re-invest myself before it all grinds to a halt for the baseball play offs. Yes, yes I will.
I hardly know where I want to start there are so many things bursting out to be said. So predictions that were right first. I thought they would not be away for 12 months. I thought Angela would be pregnant. I thought Booth would be attached to a war correspondent. Not right: I thought Brennan would be all eager to hook up with Booth. I thought he would be in PTSD mode and grumpy.
The introductory section was good. There was Bones suffering from Daisy contact. There was Booth being a hero. There was Daisy stripping down to her underwear. Monday eh? There was Bones kicking armed guerrilla ass. There was Booth saving a child's life. There was Bones stripping and mending a carburretor and removing a snake. Totally self sufficient, didn't need Booth. She remembered the snakes in the maze moment though when she had to jump on Booth. Good touch. So, no pining to be seen yet.
Meanwhile, back in Washington and Cam is having a tough time being just an FBI Coroner and is about to lose her job. Who steps into the breach and rallies reinforcements? Why Caroline of course! This was good. She uses her influence to telephone Booth in a war zone, Brennan in Maluku where satellite phones can only be used for emergencies, and no doubt Hodgins and Angela in Paris. So Sweets has to be brought back too. He is tinkling the ivories and grown a goatee! Good look I thought. They all leap back. All of them. I guess true happiness may not be found in faraway exotic places or piano lounges. There's no place like home.
Now, reunions. Aaaaaw it was lovely. They were Booth and Bones again: Booth not saying what he's been doing "It was mostly administrative" and Bones boasting about her taking down of the guerillas. But Booth did show her the picture of Hannah on his phone and she was glad that he was happy. He thinks he's moved on. But so has the world as the Jeffersonian lab has been shut down and they have to go to the FBI. Big reunions all round except for the interns. It seems without Brennan there is no Medico-Legal lab. Their new lives are suitably dealt with to remove them from the show with no chance of coming back. Except Wendell. Yay! I liked Wendell the best. I liked how Cam was touched by the team's concern for her and her anger at Bones: self interest over-riding the needs of others. Maybe that could be seen as a reason for Bones to deny herself in the future? i.e. it wouldn't be fair to the others if she were to become personally involved with Booth. Hope that isn't a prediction for the Season.
As for Booth, first priority is to have breakfast with Parker. He is obviously nailing his colours to the mast here. The incident in Afghanistan when he saved the child really fired that home. The mother said the kidnapping wouldn't have happened if his father had been at home instead of fighting other people's war. That gave Booth pause, so a chance to get back home can be channeled into his need to be there for Parker. He emphasises that he is never going to leave again. I got irritated with the way Parker was used to try to glorify war, but Booth didn't rise to the bait. Of course he wouldn't. Booth wasn't in it for the glory.
Soon, Brennan is rescuing Wendell from his bus mechanic job and they're back on the case. Which of course involves a child. Five minutes in and they've established that it is not the missing boy that would cause Cam to lose her job, but an Asian 3 year old. This was a bit too simplistic. I can't believe Cam wouldn't recognise the underlying bone structure. I mean, Angela did, never mind a forensic anthropologist from New York! Still, her job was saved which was the main thing.
Booth is back in the interview room with the parents of the missing child and shows empathy with the situation and the mother if not the separated father. He knows something is off, but not quite what. Still, Sweets, in a turmoil over whether or not to get back with Daisy, is back on the job and recognises cues that the father is telling the truth. He also asks Booth a question, which Booth agrees to answer because it's about Sweets not himself. He advises Sweets to move on and be happy in the rest of his life. Clear signal again that Booth is also moving on. He even shows Caroline the picture of Hannah when she is making noises about getting back together with Bones to reassure her that that part of his life is over.
Personally, I don't believe a word of it even if Booth does. 7 months apart does not a break make. I mean, look at Sweets. He can't let go of Daisy even though she is telling him to, Booth is telling him to and he's telling himself to and he's only known her two years. Bones saying that Hannah is good for him because she can give him the sort of relationship he wants does not sit easy when she is also telling him she dreamed about him in Maluku, even if they were only job related dreams. Booth keeps his cards close to his chest. Never tells her anything about his dreams.
Anyway, Angela questions Bones about the Booth situation and Brennan denies there is anything left between them. This is in a conversation between 'sisters' where truths are usually told, as illustrated by Angela telling her she is pregnant. Yet again, Brennan couches her thoughts in purely scientific terms, to distance herself from emotions though she finally does grasp that she will be an aunt, metaphorically speaking.
Talking, of metaphors, these were laid down with a shovel as ever. You know, a metaphor is not a metaphor if you have to keep pointing it out. Maybe it's just me but I don't have to be hit over the head with it every time something is metaphorical. Give the audience some credit please. I will have to check how many times they told us something was a metaphor. The case itself was brimming. Turns out the child found was a North Korean and there were only two North Koreans in the whole of DC. The child died accidentally. Meanwhile, Booth played a hunch and discovered the missing child had been taken by his father and hidden with his brother in Dover. Happy reunion again. Great flying tackle by Booth there.
I liked the lynchpin debate. Of course Brennan was sure it was her. After all she is the centre of the universe. Booth is chipping away though hinting he is the lynchpin. Caroline has a claim too seeing as she brought them all back together. Even Bones recognised that. I loved that moment at the bar when Brennan said she wanted to hug her. The look on Caroline's face was priceless as was the line 'Don't leave me alone with her again'. Hee heee. Then Cam reminds them all at the end that she is the boss as she re-opens the Jeffersonian. Only to find a wooly mammoth in the room. Not even a metaphorical one, though it is of course.
Conclusions? Solid opening episode getting us back into the crime scenes and with a few new avenues to add to the mix. I liked it very much especially Sweets new look. He seems to be trying to grow up on his own, leaving the nest and everything, metaphorically of course. I imagine Hannah will return from Iraq (why can't Americans pronounce that country's name) to add a chance for Brennan to put her foot in things and maybe her nose. How long will Hodgins be able to keep the secret? I think Booth's already guessed. Relationships, parents, children and home is where the heart is were this week's themes. Carry on.
I will have to go to the shops now in spite of the rain. Looks cold and windy. Well I'll just go to Tesco then and I won't have to plough down Middle Street in the teeth of a gale.
